Social media character counter

Type once and see instantly where your caption fits and where it is too long, across every major platform at the same time.

0 characters

Fits everywhere so far. Limits are the same ones Get Posting validates against.

Per platform
  • X0 / 280
  • Instagram0 / 2,200
  • Threads0 / 500
  • Facebook0 / 63,206
  • LinkedIn0 / 3,000
  • TikTok0 / 2,200
  • YouTube0 / 5,000

Every platform counts differently

The reason a post that reads perfectly on Instagram gets cut off on X is simple: every platform sets its own character limit, and they are nowhere near each other. A caption has 280 characters to work with on X but 2,200 on Instagram and TikTok. Most counters only check one platform, so you find out something is too long only after you have already pasted it in. This one checks all of them as you type.

The limits we check against

  • X280 characters
  • Instagram2,200 characters
  • Threads500 characters
  • Facebook63,206 characters
  • LinkedIn3,000 characters
  • TikTok2,200 characters
  • YouTube5,000 characters

These are the same limits Get Posting validates real posts against before they publish.

A note on emoji and links

Character counting is not always one-to-one. On X, every link counts as 23 characters no matter how long it actually is, and some emoji count as two. This tool counts each emoji as a single glyph, so if you lean on emoji heavily, give yourself a little extra headroom on the platforms that expand them.

Frequently asked questions

What is the character limit for each social media platform?
Character limits differ per platform: X allows 280 characters, Threads 500, Instagram and TikTok captions 2,200, LinkedIn 3,000, YouTube descriptions 5,000, and Facebook up to 63,206. This tool checks your text against all of them at once.
Do emoji and links count as more characters?
They can. On X, links are counted as 23 characters regardless of length, and some emoji count as two characters. This counter counts each emoji as a single character, so treat platforms that expand them as having a little less room than shown.
Why does the same caption fit on one platform but not another?
Every platform sets its own limit, so a caption that is fine on Instagram can be far too long for X. That is exactly why posting the identical text everywhere often breaks. Get Posting lets you write once and adjust a shorter version per platform.

Stop checking limits by hand.
Get Posting does it for you.

Write once, customize per platform, and Get Posting validates every post against these exact limits before it publishes, so you catch a post that would fail before it ever goes out. Same checks as this tool, running automatically, everywhere.
